Christian Lauchenauer is based in Basel, Switzerland. His work encompasses sculpture, kinetic installation, collage and video.
The mechanisms, or systems of the human psyche and society, form the main component of his artistic process.
His moving, repetitive mechanisms both visually and conceptually work in harmony together.
Mechanical mechanisms in machines or simple sequences of movement often serve as his
inspiration as he investigates how the interacting forces within a system are mutually
dependent to its overall balance. The resulting equilibrium often characterises the simultaneous imbalance.
Assuming that human beings are in a fixed connection with their environment, the artist seeks
to draw conclusions from this and to overcome the duality that often suppresses deeper insight.
Christain relies on the device of repetition, which, much like a mantra, can intuitively evoke new perspectives in the viewer. The creative process is constantly caught in a dynamic, between the forces of control and
chance. During the artistic process, numerous experiments give rise to chance objects and sketches which serve as the starting point for new sculptures. This tension sparks a kind of interplay, in which one can never bring things sufficiently under control, nor experiment enough.
A key criterion here is the Japanese artist Shih-t’ao’s conviction regarding the ‘non-methodical’:
“The perfect person has no method. Or rather, he follows that best of all methods, which consists in being non-methodical.”
