Andrew Ryder’s career as an artist spans more than fifty years. Working with paint, film, magnetism, and light.
Movement has been a continuous interest throughout his prolific body of kinetic work.
Andrew’s current wall mounted sprung dynamic artworks came about in 2020 before the emergence of artificial intelligence. Initially they were just suspended pieces with LED lights and small motors with eccentrics to shift the centre of gravity of the individual elements. These pieces evolved with the use of controlled motors using micro controllers. Their construction is subtle and has been refined over the years. The complex, subtle and extensive coding of the microcontrollers is integrated with the prolonged reverberation of the sprung steel supports and attached elements. These elements with minimal mass incorporate inertia, balance and air resistance. The resulting character of movement is a reference to living creatures with purposeful unpredictability and shifting moods.
